Chamber Fee: Is It Mandatory for Every Sole Trader, and How Much Is It?
September 14, 2026 · 4 min read
The chamber contribution is a relatively small but easily forgotten item — many only encounter it when a notice arrives from the Chamber of Commerce.
Who Has to Pay?
Every business with a company gateway (cégkapu) and a tax number — including sole traders (egyéni vállalkozó, EV) — that's listed in the chamber registry is generally required to pay the economic chamber contribution. Registration happens automatically when you start your business; you don't need to apply separately.
How Much Is the Chamber Fee?
The statutory base fee — which most sole traders pay — is typically HUF 5,000/year. This is a fixed amount due once a year, regardless of your revenue.
Important: this is a generally applicable, relatively stable amount, but it's worth checking the current chamber guidance every year, because the exact rules can change from time to time.
When and How Do You Pay?
The payment deadline for the chamber contribution is typically March 31 (for the given year) — but it's also worth confirming this every year on your own county/capital chamber of commerce and industry's website, because the exact date and payment method (bank transfer, online portal) can vary by chamber.
What Happens If You Miss the Payment?
The chamber can send a notice for an unpaid contribution, and — in case of prolonged non-payment — the debt can be collected in the same way as taxes, meaning enforcement proceedings can even be started. Although the amount is small, not paying it can lead to unpleasant administrative consequences in the longer run.
What to Watch For
- Don't forget it every year — since it's only a small, once-a-year item, it's easy to lose track of.
- Check your own chamber's current fee and deadline — this is the most reliable source, don't rely on old articles.
- Keep a record of the payment — if you get a notice, it helps to be able to quickly prove you already paid.
How Penzum Helps
You can record your chamber fee in Penzum's Settings (default HUF 5,000/year), and the obligation calendar reminds you before the payment deadline, so this small but easily forgotten item doesn't slip through the cracks.
