Company Car Tax: When Is It Relevant for a Sole Trader?
November 2, 2026 · 4 min read
Company car tax (cégautóadó) is a line item that relatively few sole traders encounter, but for those it affects, it's a regular, monthly obligation. It's worth stating up front: this is a specific tax tied to vehicle ownership/use, and you should always check its exact, current amounts and conditions with NAV's (the Hungarian Tax Authority's) official guidance — this article explains the mechanism, not specific HUF figures.
When Might a Company Car Tax Obligation Arise?
A company car tax obligation typically arises if:
- Your business (or you, as a sole trader) is the owner or financial lessee of a passenger car, and
- you use that vehicle partly or fully for business purposes, or you claim the related costs (fuel, maintenance) as business expenses.
If you use your personal car occasionally, with documentation, for business purposes (and only claim the proportional cost), the situation can be different than if the car is actually registered in the business's name or recorded as a business asset. The exact boundary is specific to the legislation, so it's worth clarifying your own case with an accountant.
How Is It Calculated?
Company car tax is typically based on the vehicle's engine power and environmental classification, according to an itemized table published by NAV, and is payable monthly. Since these rates and bracket thresholds can change from time to time, you should always check the exact, current amounts on NAV's official website — Penzum does not currently calculate this automatically.
What to Watch For
- Clarify whether your vehicle qualifies as a business asset, or whether it's just occasional, proportional cost accounting — this fundamentally affects whether the obligation arises at all.
- If it's relevant to you, keep accurate records of the vehicle's details (power, environmental classification) so you can correctly determine the amount due.
- Don't confuse fuel and maintenance cost accounting with company car tax — these are two different questions: one is about VSZJA (personal income tax based on actual business profit) cost accounting (see our article about that), the other is a separate, vehicle-based tax obligation.
- Ask an accountant if you're unsure — this is one of the areas where a misclassification can have significant, retroactive consequences.
Why Doesn't Penzum Calculate This (Yet)?
Penzum currently focuses primarily on SZJA (personal income tax), TB (social security contribution), szocho (social contribution tax), HIPA (local business tax), and their related obligations — company car tax is a more specialized, vehicle-ownership-related area that the calculator doesn't yet include. If this applies to you, it's worth keeping a separate record of it until Penzum possibly expands this feature.
